Ottawa, December 10, 2024 – The Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival regrets to announce that the 2025 edition of its iconic ice races will not take place. This decision follows two consecutive years, 2023 and 2024, in which the Rideau Canal Skateway was unable to open and host the races due to insufficient ice conditions.

As the world’s largest ice dragon boat event, the festival relies on a safe ice surface on the Skateway to host its unique and beloved races. Unfortunately, with ongoing challenges related to climate conditions, the required ice thickness cannot be guaranteed for the 2025 season.

“We are deeply disappointed to make this decision,” said John Brooman, CEO. “The Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival has always celebrated winter, community spirit, and cultural connection. However, the safety and viability of the event must come first.”

The festival team remains committed to exploring future possibilities for a sustainable return of the races and will continue to monitor environmental and technological developments to adapt to changing winter conditions.

The Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival thanks its participants, partners, and supporters for their understanding and dedication.
